Killarney RFC News – 20th of February, 2015

Mini’s:

Another great training session last Saturday. There are fantastic numbers turning up to training each and every Saturday. Thanks for bringing back the envelopes for the 6 Nations raffle. Any unreturned tickets can be returned next Saturday, ahead of the draw on the 25th of February next. Training as normal next Saturday (10:30am at Knockreer).

U16’s:

Pan Munster U16’s –Killarney RFC 10 Skibbereen17:

Killarney U16’s hosted Skibbereen at Direen on Saturday morning, in great playing conditions. Stephen Murphy scored a fantastic intercept try in the first half, which went unconverted. Tyler Keogh should great awareness to touch down in the second half, which also went unconverted for the home side. The away side really played well in the first half and our lads played much better in the second half, though we went down to a better side on the day.

U18’s:

South Munster Under 18s League Phase 2, Kanturk RFC 5 South Kerry 69:

The game was played in perfect weather conditions. South Kerry kicked off and the Kanturk receiver was bundled into touch on the home 22 from a good chase of the kick off. From the resulting line out South Kerry drove the maul before a break by Cathal Doyle who passed to Neil O’Brien for touchdown under the posts which he converted himself. South Kerry retained the ball strongly from the restart and attacked strongly. Following good recycles by the pack heading right South Kerry swung the ball across the backline wide left with an overlap for Cathal Doyle to score running around under the posts to leave the score at 14 – 0. While Kanturk attacked strongly for the rest of the half they couldn’t score. They came close on the stroke of half time with a good move seeing them cross the line in the right corner but before touching down the attacker was bundled strongly into touch in goal by Ben Eadie. In the same period South Kerry had clocked up 4 more tries through Dylan Sheahan, Tiarnan Clifford, Liam King and George Evans with 3 being converted by Neil O’Brien. Kanturk started the second half strongly and though a good attack was halted by the visitors close to the line, a cross kick to the far side was well directed leading to a Kanturk try. South Kerry struggled to reassert their dominance amid strong exchanges and spirited resistance by Kanturk. However, the defence was ultimately pierced by a second try for Tiarnan Clifford. South Kerry progressively introduced their substitutes after this all of whom made a strong impact. The combination of their fresh legs and a tiring home team saw further tries recorded by Liam King (2), Danny O’Sullivan and George Evans with conversions leaving the final score at 69 – 5 for the away team. This score didn’t do justice to a gallant Kanturk team one of whose best players suffered an early injury. Thanks are due to all the supporters who travelled to cheer on the South Kerry team who played very strongly on a day where everything went well for them. Next match is on Wednesday in Killarney versus Cobh Pirates @ 3.30 p.m. and the team will be delighted to have even more home supporters at what will be a tough assignment.

Senior XV:

Munster Junior Cup: – St. Mary’s RFC 44 Killarney 5:

Killarney travelled to Limerick for the next round of the Munster Junior Cup on Sunday. They faced a very stiff test in St. Mary’s, a team playing well in Division 1. To be fair to the lads, the score line does not do any justice to Killarney’s scrum, which was dominant on the day. The forwards put in a massive work rate in the scrum, but St. Mary’s proved just too strong and notched up too many unanswered tries. Brian O’Sullivan got over the line for the away side, but the conversion was missed. The lads are certainly improving and have another big league game away to Limerick side Presentation, at Rathurd next Sunday. Senior training continues on Tuesday and Friday nights.
