Killarney RFC News: 23rd of March 2015

St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2015:

Killarney RFC was proudly represented by our minis section, in this year’s Killarney St. Patrick’s day parade. We had a great turn out for the big parade and the lads were not to be outdone by the band that we were marching after, as shouts of ‘1…2….3…. Killarney’ rang out all around the town. Every one of the kids had a great time and wonderful memories were made. We were led in the parade by our own excellent Grand Marshalls from the U7 squad, who led us on our trek around the town. Firstly, Emjay Leslie led us, followed by Robert Daly, Donncha Murphy, Fergal Murphy, Cian Stack, Sean Landers and Paddy Moore who all lead the Kilarney RFC contingent with pride! A great day was had by all and we would like to thank the parents who brought in their kids, the parents who marched with us as well as the kids themselves. Finally we would like to thank the coaches who marshalled the KRFC guys: Liam, Tom, Ed, Feargal and Pat. Well done one and all!

Under 12’s trip to Rockwell:

The Killarney U12s made the long trip to Tipperary for the annual Rockwell Blitz. The opposition was not revealed until arrival at the venue and Killarney were lining out against the big guns on Munster namely Cork Constitution and Clonmel. Copsewood Gaels of Pallaskenry were the fourth team in the pool. First up was Clonmel who provided stiff opposition. Clonmel scored a few early tries but Killarney dug deep to put on a strong comeback. The hits were hard and Donnacha Greally had to come off with a shoulder Injury. There was some fine ball carrying from Brendan O’ Sullivan, Ruari Coghlan and Padraig Talbot. Daniel Carroll was producing some good runs. Clonmel stole the game by one try but it was a valiant effort by the Killarney Lads.
Next up were Copsewood Gaels and Killarney played some champagne rugby with scrum half Colin O’ Sullivan dictating the pace. The bench was emptied and some fine performances was put in by Adam Cronin, Sean Hickey, Harry Kelly, Josh Cambell and Adam Neary. Copsewood Gaels were helped on their way by Killarney’s Sean O’ Sullivan and Ethan O’ Neill. A fine win for Killarney. The Final Game was against the mighty Cork Constitution. The Killarney Lads dug deep and the game was level at half time with some great tackling from James Kennelly, Rian Colleran, William Casey and Liam Randles. Unfortunately Killarneys attrition rate in the second half was high with Bailey O’ Sullivan and Ethan McKeon needing attention on the sideline. Cork Constitution eventually ran out winners in this David and Goliath battle, but the coaches were extremely proud of their young warriors.
All in all it was a great day and enjoyable for all involved. What a day for rugby.
Peter Walsh was absent and on the injury list. His presence and skil were missed on the day. Get well soon Peter

South Kerry v North West Kerry – West Munster Under 18s Cup:

South Kerry travelled to Castleisland to play North West Kerry in the West Munster under 18s cup on Saturday 21st March. Weather conditions were excellent for the match. North West Kerry started well and pressed from the kick off but were well repelled by strong defence. From a penalty South Kerry gained territory in the home half and stayed there for a long period but were unable to score until from a scrum the ball was moved wide to George Evans just outside the home 22. He broke for the line and with the aid of a clever dummy crashed over wide out on the right hand side. The conversion was missed. From the kick off North West Kerry surged back into the game and came very close to a try on the left. However, shortly afterwards a penalty was awarded under the posts which brought the score to 5-3 for the visitors. The rest of the half saw attacks from each side. Fionan O’Sullivan who had made some great tackles had to leave the field with concussion. Before half time North West Kerry converted another penalty award to leave the half time score at 6-5 for the home team.

The second half saw South Kerry start very strongly. When a try seemed likely they were held up illegally and elected to kick for 3 points. The penalty struck the left upright and was cleared upfield. However, South Kerry kept it in play and ran back strongly. From this came a great move culminating in a great team try scored by Tiarnan Clifford. Neil O’Brien added the conversion to reclaim the lead 12-6. North West Kerry continued to press and though met with strong defence finally crossed at the left touchline for a try. The conversion failed and now the score stood at 12-11 with 10 minutes remaining. Almost all the rest of the match was spent in the South Kerry half but the defence was resolute against strong attacks. Into injury time an attack was held just metres short of the line with the attacker isolated. A penalty was awarded to South Kerry who kicked out of play for the full time whistle.

Next up is the decider against Tralee for the West Munster cup on Saturday next 28th March @ 12.00 midday in Tralee. Thanks to all supporters at the match and to North West Kerry for a great contest. Come and cheer the boys on again next week!!
