Minis are back:

After the summer break, the new Minis season started in earnest last Saturday morning. A fine morning greeted us up in Aghadoe as we opened the gates on a new chapter for mini rugby in Killarney. It was clear from the outset that this would be no normal day as players new and current started to gather from 10 o’Clock! We were absolutely thrilled with the number of kids who commenced training for the new season. There was a nice mix of new and existing players and it was truly historic to see the pitches being so busy with players from 5 years up to 11 playing rugby. It was a great opportunity for the parents to enjoy the new track which surrounds the site and to check out the new Trim Trail as their children played under the supervision of all our expert coaches. Training resumes next Saturday between 10:30 and 12 midday.
We would like to acknowledge the work done over the years by Tom Campbell. Tom was the coordinator for the minis over the past 10 years or so and has established a great crew of coaches and a wonderful ethos across the minis section. Tom has moved on to take up the mantle of Youth Manager but was on hand on Saturday to help our new Mini Coordinator Liam Murphy find his feet. This is a sign of the man who has rugby and KRFC at his heart. Thanks Tom for everything and we look forward to working with closely you to forge even stronger links with the youths and minis at our new home!

Moss Keane Blitz:

Following a wonderful opening Saturday morning for the Minis, Killarney Senior XV hosted the annual Moss Keane Cup. A 12-a-side blitz for all Kerry Clubs it is a Munster Branch event under the auspices of the Kerry Committee. On a fine afternoon we welcomed squads from Corca Dhuibhne and Killorglin. Sadly Castleisland, Tralee and Iveragh Eagles failed to turn up. Tralee had a fixture against a Welsh club while Iveragh are struggling with numbers in South Kerry.
Lack of teams did not stop the round robin games between the sides and Killarney drew first blood against Killorglin with a comfortable 7 tries to 1 opener on the fabulous new pitch at Aghadoe. Killorglin bowed out against Corca Dhuibhne who were well drilled ending up 20-10 winners (4 tries to 2). In sporting manner Killorglin stayed on to watch the final which was for the most part a rip-roaring contest. The visitors finally gaining the upper hand in the last quarter winning 20-10. Two excellent tries by John Friel and Michael Sheahan were not enough but Ger Moynihan and Alan Mulligan and the team battled on to the end. Played in great spirit all teams had brisk performances in the sunshine and it was an excellent way to kick the season off. Corca Dhuibhne presented a very nice piece of west Kerry pottery to Killarney in recognition of the new grounds. Even the Branch officials commented on the superb quality of the pitches and we’re looking forward to coming here again. Congrats to a well drilled West Kerry side who Killarney travel away to on the first league assignment on October 3rd or 4th (TBA).
