Saturday morning – From a Coach’s Perspective!

Written by our U8 coach, Liam Murphy, this is a poem for all Rugby Coaches who understand the Saturday Morning routine!

Saturday Morning:

It’s early Saturday morning, the alarm’s gone off again.
With eyes glued shut, I must get up and check has there been rain?

The kids are already up and shuffling around the house.
The search is on for their rugby gear, “Daddy will you help us out?”

The obligatory “where did you leave it” has passed these lips again.
I already know the answer, it’s funny how things never change!

Alas it’s time to go, to the pitch, my minds in a muddle!
Time to get there before the chaos and try to avoid the puddles!

The kids start to arrive, even before I’ve a cone in place.
I have my plan, today will be fine, for today’s focus is on β€˜Space’!

My fellow coach arrives, We discuss our plan for the day.
Yet we know a shower of rain could wash those plans away!

The kids are great and get stuck in, to everything that’s shown.
Though some prefer the puddles or ask “when are we going home?”

The warm-up games are fun, for the mornings can be so cold.
Though trying to keep up with 30 kids can make a coach feel old!

We practice all our drills, work on the basics of the game.
Then it’s time to play a match, the teams are never the same.

The Captain shouts “move out wide”, as he taps the ball to start.
His teammates are like a swarming army – brave and full of heart.

But then a lad makes a break, having caught that dipping pass,
And offloads the ball to his mate, before getting a mouthful of grass.

A boy is running for the line, with his team mates in support,
A sidestep swift, the try is scored, a cheer breaks out in force!

Tackles are made and tries are scored. Everyone has their role.
Before we know it, the whistle goes and it’s time to head for home.

This is the beauty of mini rugby, a game of respect and pride,
To see our charges all line up to shake hands and give a smile.

And off they trot for another week. Another great session complete.
While the coaches pack the gear away, and get in before the sleet!

Off home we go, to a nice warm fire and maybe a cup of tea.
What will we do in the next session? You’ll just have to wait and see!
