Killarney grind out 1st round Junior Cup away win

Bantry 11-Killarney 18

Killarney travelled to Bantry for the first game of the new year. Right from the start Bantry put Killarney under serious pressure and at one stage achieved over 20 phases of play but were not able to penetrate a strong Killarney defence.

15 minutes in, Killarney began to assert dominance in the game. A superb scrum forced a knock on which set the tone for the remainder of the first half. A penalty for a high tackle gave Oisin O Shea a chance to open the scoreboard and duly converted a difficult kick. 3-0 Killarney.

Killarney started the second half as they finished the first, playing some great running rugby. Bantry were now under all sorts of pressure and they soon gave away a penalty for another high tackle which O’Shea converted. Minutes later Brian Lynch crossed the line for Killarney’s first try. Killarney were relentless during this period keeping the pressure on Bantry. Lynch crossed the line soon after for his second try. Bantry finished strong and managed to close the gap with two minutes remaining on the clock but it was not enough to defeat a very solid Killarney performance.

Coach Diarmuid O’Malley added “Bantry were very determined to try and topple us today and started very strong and played some very good rugby and really tested our defense in those first twenty minutes. We then played some superb attaching rugby and scored two great tries and were a little unlucky not to get a couple of more. It was the perfect preparation for our league game in Dungarvan next Sunday – a game we must win to stay in contention for the league title”.
