U16s complete league and Cup double

Killarney U16s completed a West Munster League and Cup double by defeating Corca Dhuibhne in last Saturday’s final in Tralee.

Having defeated RCD in the league before Christmas but exited the Munster Cup at the quarter final stage on a tie break after a 13-13 draw with Corca Dhuibhne – this match represented a chance to confirm supremacy.

Early stages were keenly fought with both teams on the attack. Killarney opened the scoring with a close range try from Alex Sheahan after extended pressure on the RCD tryline.

Corca Dhuibhne replied with a penalty after sustained pressure in the Killarney 22 failed to result in a try. RCD later went close but the referee ruled that the ball had been held up.

Half time arrived with no further additions to the score despite numerous chances as defences on both sides managed to resist.

A penalty after halftime extended the Killarney lead to 8-3.

Killarney struck a crucial blow with their second try through Jack Gabbett. Although conversion was missed, the lead was now 13-3 with time running out. Continued Killarney pressure brought further penalties – opting for the posts brought no further scores but ate up time. The result was confirmed by the third try – scored by Bryan Walsh, who also converted to push out our lead to 20-3.

Congratulations to the lads on a successful season – West Munster League and Cup winners.
