On Saturday afternoon in a home fixture with perfect conditions for a cracking game of rugby, our KILK girls took on a Garryowen team in a semi final game to decide a place in the finals.
Our girls started strong on the front foot, scoring 2 early tries after some great forwards domination; one by a forward and 1 by our backs. This was later followed up by another from our backs, and then another strong forward’s try.
All tries scored out wide made for difficult conversion attempts, with no wind to assist. Killarney led 20-0, before Garryowen scored a try and converted, finding a gap in the defence following a quick unexpected turnover after several phases of play by our girls.
Half-time soon followed with a scoreline of 20-7.
Both teams started evenly in the second half, but our girls soon managed to kick up a gear and dominate play, scoring 1 backs tries and 2 forwards tries, 1 of which was converted.
Good defensive play in the 2nd half had kept Garryowen off the scoresheet until they had a quick break in the final minutes, which was almost held up on the line but was well scored and converted. At the final whistle, the game ended 39-14, with our girls booking their place in the final.
Thanks to the players and management of Garryowen RFC for a great contest, and to the referee for a free-flowing game. Also, huge thanks to the great support on the day, and we hope many will make the trip in a few weeks to support us in the final!
